Food for Thought- The Da Vinci Code

Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code has provoked worldwide controversy recently which has allegedly resulted in confusion among Christians and non Christians alike. After much deliberation and fed up of being in the dark about all the fuss, I read the book and agree from a literary point of view it is a fantastic mystery and very cleverly written. As a Christian, I can now see why there is cause for concern although even if the writer had not admitted that the book was fiction, I do not see how a Christian's faith can be tested by it. It is at the end of the day no different to any other rumour, which spreads like wildfire which may cause pain and suffering to its victims. We all love to gossip but ultimately in the long run it usually causes someone more harm than good. If you do not listen to rumours and stay steadfast to your own beliefs you will remain unscathed. The Da Vinci code has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and is shortly to be made into a film. Like Harry Potter before it the debate has increased publicity and sales of both books but it has also served to increase conversations about religious beliefs and teachings as well. I believe that a book such as this, however cleverly written should be unable to shake the faith of a true believer who one hopes will remain steadfast to the Christian faith!
