On her first attempt to join the Navy she was not successful and rather than be told to apply again in a year's time she was told not to re-apply again ever. But 36 year old Lt (Q) Gloria Ademokun as she is now was not ready to take “No” for an answer.
She joined the reserves at HMS Wildfire where she excelled and went on to be double rewarded for being the best sailor in her unit and for her services in Iraq for which she received the much coveted Herbert Lott Naval Trust Award .
Says Gloria “I was determined to prove that I could do it and I wanted to excel. I was completely overwhelmed when I received the Herbert Lott Award, and even more so when I realised that only two people are awarded each year in the entire Navy.
Lt (Q) Ademokun signed up with the RNR while working as an Intensive Care Nurse at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead. “I joined the reserves to meet people and for the adventure. I have been on sailing trips, snowboarding, climbing expeditions, rifle shooting and lots more.” she said. “I was even part of the Guard of Honour at the Mayor's show in London last year,” she went on with pride.”
She has recently taken up full time service in the Royal Navy where she was recently awarded the Doris Graham prize for being the top student at Britannia Royal Naval College during the Accessed Command Exercise (ACE) which is a compulsory model and involved gruelling physical and mental stamina to endure 4 days on the moors with rations and carrying 45 to 50 kilos of weight around. She is currently in Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service at the Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
