Nigeria-sat 1 is one of 97 satellites which were launched in 2003 and Nigeria is the third African country after South Africa (GREENSAT and SUNSAT) and Algeria (Alsat) to launch a satellite in space. With the new advantage of remote sensing, the government can now deal more effectively with a number of issues affecting the development and living standards of the country such as agriculture and irrigation, location of mineral and water resources, soil erosion, deforestation, survey of oil pipe lines and related smuggling activities, weather forecasting, communications and Population surveys. For the very first time ever, it will be possible to obtain accurate figures at the next population census!

Nigeria anticipates earning US$2m annually from other African countries who subscribe to the service. The agency is said to be looking towards the launch of a second satellite Nigeria Sat-2 and a communications satellite NIGCOMSAT-1 in the very near future, which will play a big role in bringing Nigeria and Africa as a whole into the digital age of Information Technology amongst other things and will provide another opportunity to generate a sizeable income from neighbouring African countries.
