HealthyAfrica, a charitable organisation registered in England , would like to invite you and your friends to a presentation on its work in Nigeria .
Last year, HealthyAfrica opened its pilot healthcare system in Epe, near Lagos , Nigeria . This was in response to the very poor state of the health of Nigerians.
You may or may not know that the average life expectancy in Nigeria is currently less than 50 Years. One in five children die before their fifth birthday while one in a hundred women die as a result of childbirth. These are all government statistics which most people believe to be conservative estimates. In addition, Nigeria has the third highest number of HIV positive people in the world. Due to the perception of Nigeria as both a rich and corrupt country, these appalling statistics do not seem to be able to attract the right response from Nigerians and the international community. As the deaths are spread all over the country - often remote and rural areas, the crisis in Nigeria does not have the same visual impact or the attention of the world media. Nigeria receives about $1 per capita in aid compared with the sub-Saharan average of $21 per capita.
The health system that HealthyAfrica has set up was able to achieve in its first year:
- 0.1% childhood mortality (20% nationally)
- No maternal mortality although the numbers were quite low in the first year (23)
- 74% of births were supervised by a midwife (35% nationally)
- 1% crude death rate (19% nationally)
Come and listen to a presentation on how this was achieved and how you can help expand the programme across Nigeria and Africa .
