Tesco Race for Life

It was a crisp day with a slight drizzle in the air, just right for running 5k around Hyde Park . Baker Street was streaming with females of all ages, shapes and sizes and you could feel the excitement and euphoria as soon as you came through the ticket barriers. These sisters of Eve all had one thing in common ‘the race for life,' where you can walk or run at your own pace with thousands other women, from all over the country. It is a wonderful opportunity to personally do something to combat the war against the deadly cancers claiming the lives of millions of people world wide including some of our friends and loved ones, by raising awareness and funds towards much needed medical research to help more people survive the various different forms of it.

For 8 friends however, it was more than that. Dr. Remi Odejinmi was pleasantly

surprised and somewhat overwhelmed when 8 of her girlfriends agreed to her request that they all sign up together. For most including herself, this was their first race of any kind and it was very daunting to say the least! They left nothing to chance and prepared for the race, following Odejinmi's lead who devised her own training programme, which she adhered to diligently. On the day with support from family and friends all 8 of them proudly made it round claiming their prized medals at the end and raising approximately £1500.00 For Cancer Research.

Odejinmi, a Consultant anaesthetist at King George Hospital Ilford Essex , said “it was both exhilarating and overwhelming and I felt blessed to have been able to take part. I was moved to tears knowing that we were running with women who had cancer or were cured from it; their female relatives, colleagues and friends. I did it for my sister Roseline and everyone else who has been touched by cancer. I am proud that I trained hard enough to achieve my personal goal which was to run all the way and that I had my close family and friends on board with me...”
