Queen Amina “Warrior Princess”

Amina is a legend who in or around the 16th century, reigned over Zazzau one of the seven Hausa states in what is today Northern Nigeria, later renamed Zaria after her younger sister.
Famed for her military prowess in battle, the empire reached the peak of its fame and glory during her reign, dominating most of the other Hausa states and beyond including the lucrative Trans Saharan trade routes. She is celebrated throughout history for her bravery and military expertise and was often described as “a woman as capable as a man.” She is also credited with fortifying the city walls of the areas she conquered, which subsequently became a characteristic of all the Hausa states, some of which are still standing till today.
The legend of Amina lives on today in the 20th century where for some she represents a symbol of the strength of womanhood and this is also reflected in the TV sitcom Xena the Warrior Princess, which is said to be loosely based upon her character. The stamp above was issued in 1976 to celebrate World Women's day.
We owe it to the past to educate our future. Let us celebrate our Independence and Black History, by honouring our heroes and heroines of the past and future- read a book, watch a movie, or visit an exhibition.
