UN pledges $1.2 b towards food aid

THE cost of major food commodities has doubled over the last couple of years, with rice, corn and wheat at record highs. The UN has pledged $1.2b towards food aid but Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said the international trade system needed to be made to work more effectively to make food available at reasonable prices and that more research was required into the impact of biofuels which according to the International Food Policy Research Institute are behind 30% of the global food price rises.
