“Leaders are Readers” is the brainchild of Jumoke Sherlock, who practiced as a solicitor for several years before becoming a full time educator with a Saturday School offering classes in Maths, English and Reading.

Frustrated wit the State school system, Jumoke started off teaching her then 3 year old daughter how to read using the “Jolly Phonics” method.” “ The results were so immediate and gratifying,” says Jumoke. “I went on to teach the children of my family and friends in my living room. I prepared my own worksheets and games. It was hard work but I thoroughly enjoyed it.” she mused.

Today Jumoke has come a long way from teaching children at home. She has 160 pupils in 15 classes of 8 children, aged from 3 ½ to 13 from 9am to 6pm every Saturday during term time. “We now teach reading using Phonographix which is an analytical method based on all the sounds of English as opposed to the synthetic method which some have argued to be artificial. This has enabled children to learn to read more quickly and fluently than before. It has been particularly successful in teaching children with dyslexia and special needs. Some of these children were labelled trouble makers but after teaching on a one -to -one basis, or in a group they all learned to read in 4-5 months. We are the only centre in North London using this method to teach children in groups from the age of 3½”. she continued with pride.
